Banned

There just doesn't seem to be enough time. Sunday magazines lie by the bed, articles bookmarked for future reading and recipe's ripped out for testing on my guinea pig - The Sherpa. Music waiting to be released from the confines of their electronic homes so that they may slip in and tickle the crevices of my ear. Books bought and borrowed beckon me with words, stories and characters. Tempting me to lose myself in them and ignore the persistent whistle of the milk cooker. All these things languish in the corners of my life. While I go through the motions of every day life.

So I'm going on a weeklong Television ban. Just to re-evaluate its role in my life. The Sherpa thinks I'm being extreme and won't last till the end of the day. Watch this space to find out how it goes!

Hear Hear!!! I look forward to the results of this experiment. Hope you don't have serious withdrawal symptoms ;)
(Something about this post reminded me of the opening lines of Auden's Funeral Blues)

you'll do fine. we lived nearly 6 months without a TV and we didn't miss it one bit.

Of course, the moment we bought one we were tempted to check out what was going on.....we were so despo as to even watch French and Flemish programming!

Sorry Shoefie, couldn't stop laughing :) Do let us know how you get on. Good Luck

WARNING: TV celibacy often results in blogging wantoness among certain individuals. Often these reactions are gender specific and in certain instances....

Giving up TV is hard? Really? I haven't had a television in almost two years now, and it hasn't bothered me at all.

Best of luck with breaking the addiction. And if you feel tempted at some point, read this:

Falstaff - Actually it's not been hard at all. I think the post may have given off the impression that I'm a tv zombie... I'm not :) And I'll be sure to read your post for inspiration

shub - please refer to above! and i toyed with the idea of a blogging ban but that seemed a bit too extreme for my tastes too!

neha - I actually thought tv was much better here than in India. How can one not enjoy Plastic Surgery Live ;)

Ammani - Many thanks :D

Here is a list to get you back to your addiction. :D

best reality TV show (should not follow every episode. stop after few episodes.) Judge Judy.
Family drama (chic's type): "Gilmore girls"
Crime drama series: CSI (don't watch Miami or NY), Law & Order, L&O SVU, L&O CI, (no I have stopped following L&O Jury trial)
Family and law and social work kind of thing: "Judging amy"..
Law and social services kind of thing is the "Guardian".

ah wait.. these are america's finest!!

Planet Earth! yaay, I know there must something good in the British Television.
Honestly, I like "Keeping up apperances" (any episode), "fawlty towers" (some episodes).. I also followed "family affairs" (don't laugh), it was very educative (don't laugh). Honestly, I learnt a lot about "London-English".

IMO, watching TV gives you an idea about the society (if portrayed representatively), particularly if you are from a very different one. Family affairs was my favourite for this reason. (I don't follow anymore).

My all time fav among the above is Judging Amy.
:-)

If you have ITV2, there is Pelican Brief at 9pm tonight. (Your Sherpa is going to kill me). If you are a Denzel fan (I am), it is a must-see movie, if you haven't seen it before.

Premalatha - I agree with you - tv really helped me understand the brits a lot better. Which is pretty important when you're trying to sell them stuff.

I've seen Pelican Brief! And hey you're supposed to be helping me not watch tv - not give me reasons to switch it on :)

hey there...
i'm a new reader - relatively - and i liked your stuff so much i went back and read everything from the beginning! I guess it helps that i'm an ex-creative, housewife, mother - with a LITTLE extra time to herself when the kid's asleep. all the best with the tv. the hubby and i decided not to buy one at all. no temptation. and we read the newspapers for news. plenty of time to do other stuff. wish i could get rid of this computer too, but gotta check my own mail!! by the way - have you checked out potterybarn.com - nice interiors. you can tell me some good sites too! that's the only good one i know. :o(
and "anonymous" seems to be a regular visitor to your site even tho s/he hates it. Hm. i think s/he is more full of you than you are. :oD Heh.

Media deprivation is seriously the best way to get your life back. Try it. And you'll be so glad you did. Happy holidays!

chucking out the tv is one of the best moves i've ever made. however, one eventually ends up filling that space with other stuff. besides, bbc london and radio 4 absolutely rock!
